NTA Launches Free Leap Card for Children Aged 5–8

On 3rd September 2025, the National Transport Authority (NTA) officially launched the Child 5–8 Leap Card, a new initiative offering free public transport to children aged 5 to 8 across Ireland - including all TFI Local Link Galway services.


What Does the Card Cover?


Children can travel free on:

  • TFI Local Link Galway routes

  • Dublin Bus & Go-Ahead Ireland

  • Bus Éireann (excluding Expressway & School Transport)

  • LUAS

  • Irish Rail

  • Kilkenny & Portlaoise Town Buses

  • Routes 139, 975, 143, and 144


Validity:

The card is valid until the end of the month in which the child turns 9.


How to Apply:

Parents and guardians can apply online at www.leapcard.ie and have the card delivered directly to their home.


Tap On/Off Reminder:

  • LUAS & Train: Tap on and off

  • Bus (including TFI Local Link): Just tap on


Why It Matters:

This expanded travel scheme is expected to benefit around 263,000 children nationwide. For families in County Galway, it means easier, more affordable access to school, activities, and community events – all while promoting sustainable travel habits.
